I decided that since I work in the hospitality business that I would share some advice and guidance for people. I also felt it was important I added this information since I notice everyday that people are clueless about Hotel Etiquette!
Most people are not aware of the fact that 90% of housekeepers get paid by room not by hour. They are also required to finish a certain amount of rooms per hour. A normal pay for housekeepers per room is anywhere in between 2.75-4.50 a room. Obviously higher quality hotels pay more since there is more to put in the room and more to clean. So if you trash your hotel room and it takes a maid over an hour to clean your room they just lost money. Also EVERYONE should tip housekeepers! $2.00 a day standard, unless your room cost you over $200 a night then $3.00 and then a $1.00 more per 50.00 increase in room rate from $200! The reason for this is because the more you pay for your room the more amenities it has and the more a housekeeper needs to do. Now if you are staying several days you can either leave the money daily with a note letting the housekeeper know that tip is for them. Now the tipping everyday technique will possibly get you better housekeeping and extra little things here an there depending on housekeepers. If you do have the same housekeeper everyday and she knows you are a tipper they will make sure your room is priority in getting done when and how you want it. Lets be honest would anyone go out of their way to make under 5.00?! Most housekeepers can finish 2 rooms an hour and 3 rooms and our for the more basic of rooms. So the average housekeeper makes between $8-$9 dollars an hour! They work long hours and have to stay late to accommodate those people who insist on taking full advantage of the "Late Check out"! Also a rule an extra $1.oo per 30 min's after standard check out that you are still in the room.
The Complimentary Breakfast, is just that complimentary which gives you NO right or say in what is on it! Your displeasure in them not having an item you like or eat for breakfast is a irrelevant point. Why?!....Because it's FREE! Also the person who is in there stocking your breakfast they are there to do just that STOCK breakfast and wipe off tables when people leave. Their job is not to throw away your trash for you because I'm sure you clearly notice the waste paper baskets also their job is not to microwave food for you or pour you beverages! They also get paid a little more then minimum wage for a thankless job that for some reason people hear the phrase " FREE BREAKFAST" and they get super human eating skills and have the ability to wipe a breakfast room free of food in 5 minutes flat! Unless your breakfast attendant is sitting around reading a paper or something it is not necessary to point out over and over what is getting low or what kind of doughnut you'd like them to bring out next because it will be filled by them when they are done doing what they already where doing!
Check in time is posted for a reason that is because that is the time that rooms are expected to be cleaned, checked and available for rent. Early check in can be possible at times but call that day to ask if it will be however if it is not do not get all angry and explain how you booked 20 years ago and you have a jump rope contest to get to or whatever it is that requires you to be a tool and expect to get in your room ASAP. Also if they can get you in early do not start shouting demands on the type of room you want because you receiving a favor for the early check in and most likely the room type you want someone else wanted the night before and it's not available yet. Thus is why it's important to also obey the check out time so that the room can be cleaned, checked, and ready to be occupied by the check in time!
That's all I have for right now but I have LOTS and LOTS more to share but in time! I hope no one take offense and also takes the advice I give and help make their hotel stays a lot better!
